This month is a first for us with two genres new to the book club being included in the vote—two genres with which I’m unfamiliar, how about you?
Spaghetti Western
Also known as an Italian Western, the term was originally used to describe a movie with an Italian director filmed in Italy or Spain with Italian/Spanish technical staff & a cast of Italian, Spanish, German, & American actors—sometimes a fading Hollywood star & sometimes a rising one like the young Clint Eastwood in three of Sergio Leone's films. The term is now used to describe European Westerns.
Bildungsroman
A combination of two German words, bildung (meaning education) & roman (meaning novel), this literary genre focuses on the psychological & moral growth of the protagonist from youth to adulthood in which character change is critical. Heear how to pronounce this word in the video below.
In addition to these two new genres, we also have a work of historical fiction, fantastical literature, essayistic short stories, & literature.
Special thanks to Judy Tanguay & Linda Varick-Cooper for sending in suggestions this month!
