Which Cuban Book Should We Read?

Mia chose Cuba for the read next month & there’s no wonder why as she loves this island nation. She’s one of the lucky few Americans who has been able to visit Cuba since her husband’s parents were originally from there.

I must admit to being a bit jealous of her trips as I’ve heard the scuba diving is wonderful in Cuba. (A buddy of mine named Olga Torrey was even lucky enough to go diving with Cuban crocodiles & got some great shots. If you want to be astounded by amazing underwater photographs, check out her web site.)

But the closest I’ve gotten to Cuba is reading a variety of wonderful Cuban poetry like this exquisite piece:

Presence

Time stands still in the school patio
amid fenced-in almond and cedar trees,
under a sky fraught with heavy rain,
between old and stately walls,
burning blindly,
non-committal and innocuous,
immutable, independent,
unattached to the trees,
to the fences and walls,
to the sky and the vertical air,
so free from corrosion
and so intense
that it fills to the brim the patio and the sky.
