Which Book Should We Read from Greece?

While preparing for the Greek vote, I was happy to discover a Spotify playlist of modern songs based upon Greek myths compiled by a student of the classics.

Thinking that you may find it just as enjoyable to play in the background as I did, I’ve included the playlist below.

My two favorites are:

#21 Orpheus by Sara Bareilles which references the tale of Orpheus who rescues his deceased love, Eurydice, from the underworld, but turns back too soon to see her thus losing her forever

#26 Pomegranate Seeds by Julian Moon which is based upon the tale of Persephone (Hades kidnaps Persephone, the daughter of Demeter who is an embodiment of Mother Nature. Hades eventually allows Persephone to leave, but because she has eaten 6 pomegranate seeds, she must return to him in the underworld for six months each year which is why winter comes. In spring, she once again returns to her mother, who then allows the earth to bloom in celebration)

Listen to the playlist on Spotify here. I hope the songs delight you.

Special thanks to the club members who sent in Greek book suggestions. We randomly choose 2 to include in the official vote as shown here. But don’t worry, any books not chosen will be included on our web site the next month with the associated person’s named showcased.

Now onto the vote.
