Which Book Should We Read from South Korea?

Our club has had a recent growth spurt & we couldn’t be happier. We’re now at 770 book club members! Guess that means a lot of you love global reads as much as we do which was made even more clear since you sent in some great Korean book suggestions this month. (We received so many we had to do a random pick of which books to include as shown here. However, any books not included in the vote will still be included in our Global Reading List next month.) Thanks to everyone who sent in suggestions.

Before we get into the vote for June’s book, I wanted to recommend a unique Korean cookbook I’ve just started reading intrigued by its many 5-star ratings. Written by an author born in Korea who moved to the US as a teenager, this book is one reviewers gushed over—from the very beginning, I can see why…& why it’s a NY Times Bestseller.

Cook Korean! (view on Amazon) is a charming introduction to the basics of Korean cooking in graphic novel form, with 64 recipes, ingredient profiles, and more, presented through light-hearted comics.

Fun to look at and easy to use, this unique combination of cookbook and graphic novel is the ideal introduction to cooking Korean cuisine at home. Robin Ha’s colorful and humorous comics fully illustrate the steps and ingredients needed to bring more than sixty traditional (and some not-so-traditional) dishes to life.

In these playful but exact recipes, you’ll learn how to create everything from easy kimchi (mak kimchi) and soy garlic beef over rice (bulgogi dupbap) to seaweed rice rolls (gimbap) and beyond. Friendly and inviting, Cook Korean! is perfect for beginners and seasoned cooks alike.

Each chapter includes personal anecdotes and cultural insights from Ha, providing an intimate entry point for those looking to try their hand at this cuisine.”

Now onto the vote.
