Book Suggestions for December?

If you voted on which country we should read in December, then you may already know which area of the world we're reading next. If not, here are a few hints.

Their rums are famed for their "hogo"—a funky, sulfurous odor & flavor that reminds more than one taster of gasoline, but in a good way.

The beautiful water of this country now covers the ruins of what was once the wickedest city on earth.

This country is the home of Ian Fleming.

No clue yet? Well, as soon I mention almost anything else, you’ll immediately know the country.

Jerk chicken.

Blue Mountain coffee.

Reggae/Bob Marley.

Yep, we’re adventuring to Jamaica! (Wondering what the wickedest city on earth was? It was Port Royal. Once the largest city in the Caribbean, it was home to pirates, gaudy displays of wealth, & loose morals. The city, largely built over sand, suffered instantly from liquifaction due to a magnitude 7.5 earthquake. The remains of the city were washed out to sea when a tsunami hit shortly thereafter.)

Speaking of Bob Marley, his son came out with a cookbook in October paying homage to the flavors of his youth with a healthy twist. As Food & Wine Magazine says, "Ziggy’s cookbook is designed to nourish the body, mind, and soul."

3 of my favorite recipes:

  • Coconut Curry Squash Soup (which I can’t get enough of)

  • Mancakes (tasty pancakes made with pumpkin seeds, walnuts, chia seeds, & flax seeds)

  • Caribbean Salsa made with fresh mango, pineapple, papaya, & jalapeno

HAVE ANY BOOK SUGGESTIONS?

Just let us know your Jamaican suggestions by Mon., Nov. 19 11PM ET. (That's NYC time. See this converted to your local time below.)

Time converter at worldtimebuddy.com

We'll use 2 suggestions from book club members, 2 suggestions from Mia (the book club moderator) & 2 of my suggestions to compile a list of 6 books on which book club members will vote. The most popular book from the list will then be read.

Please note - We're specific in our books, they must:

  • Largely occur in the location specified unless the world described is an alternate reality

  • Be written by an author born there who has spent a good portion of their life there

  • Exist in paperback & ebook available on both Amazon & Kindle at least in the US & hopefully elsewhere
